The Spectrum Laser Center specializes in laser vision correction and provides the safest and most advanced lasik procedures to our patients. Wave front technology represented one of the largest steps forward in laser vision corrective diagnostics. When this technology became available Spectrum was a first adopter. Trademarked as Custom Vue, this technology now allowed us to treat not only lower order aberrations such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism but also higher order aberrations. Higher order aberrations are not correctable with glasses or contacts, but these imperfections can limit your ability to see your best if not treated. Because of this singular advancement in lasik we now started seeing an increased number of our patients visual acuities go beyond 20/20. In fact the majority of our patients were seeing better than 20/20. Some have referred to this as 'high definition vision'.
The Spectrum Lasik Center was the first center in the upstate to adopt Intralase or 'blade free' lasik and the second in South Carolina. We realized early on that this represented a major advance in the precision and safety of creating epithelial flaps. Research had shown that the Intralase Femtosecond laser was approximately 100 times more precise than with the microkeratome or 'bladed method' and we promoted that. While some of our competitors touted this as a fad or marketing ploy, about a year or two later the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, other branches of the military as well as NASA, adopted this same technology for their pilots and astronauts. Patients who are treated with this technology typically see 20/20 the next day. While most centers in the upstate now have adopted and continue to use this technology we feel there is better technology. It's called Z - lasik. It's the next generation in laser vision correction laser technology and only available at the Spectrum Lasik Center. Not only have we produced better visual outcomes more quickly with Z - lasik as compared to Intralase, it is also less expensive to perform than with the Intralase method. Advanced surface treatments (AST) such as EPI- lasik, (pronounced epee lasik) have continued to gain increased popularity among centers that specialize in lasik surgery. This treatment is another excellent option for patients looking to eliminate their dependency on glasses and contacts. There is no safer laser vision correction method by which to correct your vision. Since there is not a flap created in the anterior surface of the cornea there can never be a flap complication. This no cut, no flap method produces excellent results for patients willing to wait a few days for their vision to come in. EPI - lasik is different than other AST's, such as PRK, because with other methods, they require the application of alcohol. The alcohol then kills the cells that cover the cornea and then are either scraped or brushed off. Not so with EPI - lasik. EPI - lasik is our preferred method to treat patients who have thin corneas, who have steeper K readings and /or are involved in contact sports. We have treated thousands of patients requiring safety and high performance vision with EPI - lasik. When lasik is compared to contact lenses there just is no comparison. Contacts are good, at least compared with the alternative, which are glasses or nothing. Over the course of your life contacts are expensive and for a lot of people a hassle. In addition to the cost of the contacts there is the annual eye exam, solutions and then the glasses when you're not wearing contacts. Untold numbers of people each year will develop some type of eye infection from wearing contacts. Approximately 12,000 people annually develop corneal ulcers from contacts which can lead to a corneal transplant. Contacts can deprive oxygen to the cornea which may cause blood vessels to grow in from the edge of the cornea called neo-vascularization.
